NZX tunnel update as of 3rd January 2010

Good news! The tunnel is opened and roads a leveled higher. Height barricades are installed and roads are narrowed to prevent huge vehicle to passing through (buses and lorries) the tunnel. I assume they also solve the drainage problem where water will flood the tunnel during rain. The tunnel is now brighter and looks neat.

The only problem left is that the lines for the road are still unchanged. Hence, I see cars are still going through the tunnel 2 ways, the confused drivers are driving dangerously through the tunnel. The signs of one way traffic for both NZX and FAS tunnel are unclear and confusing to drivers.

We hope MBPJ can quickly put on some lights or direction indication to the drivers, if possible assign some stewards to guide the drivers to the new one way traffic implementation because as of 12.30am (4th Jan 2010), I still see cars driving the opposite direction of the traffic. This can endanger lives of the public, please put in some prevention measures before it is too late.

Malaysia Boleh! Our next target is the Ara-Tropicana link. Will it open by CNY?

  • moderator, do u meant 2010 instead of 2009?

  • admin

    thanks, modified.

Glad that NZX tunnel is finally open but making it a one-way traffic is constructive action. But i suggest NZX tunnel should be 1-way traffic fr tmn mayang heading into crimson instead.. while the FAS tunnel the option of 2-way traffic.

Reason.. current traffic flow (NZX tunnel)is 1-way traffic fr crimson heading to tmn mayang. However, when residents ard ara damansara n vicinity heading back home after work.. using the FAS tunnel will lead to bottle-neck after passing thru the FAS tunnel.

Pls relook into the this problem..

Yes, that is what I feel too, the direction of the 1 way traffic should be opposite because Ara Damansara residents can still exit using FAS tunnel by turning out to Saujana exit, then turn in to PAWS/Dana 1. Right now, if anything happen to the road in Taman Megah Mas, we all be trap!

I definitely think it should be as admin says: 1 way thru Megah Mas to Crimson and 2ways thru FAS tunnel. Rationale being that the junction next to Hindu temple is the main cause of traffic jam for AD residents trying to turn right going home (the only way now) & the volume of traffic is tremendous looking at the no. of AD residences. The jam can be as far back as the start of FAS tunnel after LDP! Makes no sense for AD residents having to go thru narrow, pot-hole ridden, roads going past the Low Cost housing where traffic flow is further impeded by vehicles parked on both sides of the already narrow road, with helmet-less motorbike riders zooming in & out of junctions, past Crimson into AD.
If the authorities are truly serious abt resolving traffic jams in & out of AD, they should at least pave up the road next to the morning pasar to connect to AD. If this is to continue, sooner or later the residents of the houses after the FAS tunnel will also start to protest! When will this end, I wonder?? All this due to bad planning & decision-making by MBPJ at development stage.

    Two next main targets:
    1) Pasar Malam road to be done up properly. Fill potholes to ensure cars can drivethru smoothly.
    2) Tropicana Link to be opened soonest so relieve traffic congestion.

I think the current arrangement has its merit. I can’t paste a map in this comments so I try to describe the scenario.

If NZX tunnel is made into what everyone here suggested which is use this tunnel for incoming traffic, the jam would be more terrible. Reason is that if NZX tunnel is coming in only traffic that means the FAS tunnel will be the only exit point.

If FAS is the only exit point, therefore the traffic on a straight road after the FAS tunnel will be queue with cars. How is anyone going to turn right into Jalan Emas 1? I believe the traffic consultant has study the traffic flow well to decide on this scheme. The current scheme force all traffic coming from LDP into a straight road into FAS tunnel. So no one needs to turn into Jalan Emas 1. Traffic going out into LDP from NZX tunnel are queue in single direction and most user using the NZX tunnel has the intention of going into LDP, therefore at Jalan Emas 1, they just turn left towards LDP. This scheme prevents the bottle neck of Jalan Emas 1 as the built up there could potentially stall the entire LDP. We have to be open minded in the decision by the authorities. I’m not siding with them but in my opinion, I believe this is the best that can be achieve in short time.

But for smoother traffic flow, my opinion is that the FAS tunnel shall be one way also for incoming traffic towards this side of the township. Its a big circle for everyone but I believe both tunnel as one way access would definately smoothen the entire journey.

I strongly agree with Rookie and Admin comments and suggestions that making the tunnel one way in to NZX didn’t eliminate jam from LDP to Ara Damansara where the T-junction is the bottleneck. Unless the authority is doing something about it or else is bumper to bumper everyday where I’m experincing it now since the closure of the NZX tunnel. It should be the other way where NZX tunnel is one way in from Tmn Mayang to NZX as there are a few options to get out of AD.

  • leeyk

Guys, say what you want. This is already after the fact, things won’t change. There are only 2 events to look forward to: 1) opening of Ara-Tropicana link and/or 2) do something at that T-junction.

  • KelvinCSC

ch1, not to offend you, but if there is few options to get out of AD, that means there are few options coming in too. The only thing about this NZX tunnel is the shortest route to PJ but not necessarily fastest. I would like the tunnel to be both ways too as before the upgrading work, but well, nothing we say is going to change anything. Just hope the authorities have commitment to in medium and long term traffic planning for our area. If not, I can’t imagine how bad the traffic will be when Oasis is fully occupied. Just have to hope for the best!

  • admin

Kelvin, if we make FAS tunnel for exit, it will not be the last option because if it is jam, cars might just drive out to use NKVE or federal. Right now, if you are stuck at the NZX tunnel towards Taman Megah Mas, you have no other alternative, of course, you can still turn into FAS tunnel later then exit via Federal & NKVE…. Agree with Lee, there is nothing much we can do now, is TOO LATE to make any changes. All we can pray for is that the tropicana link will be open soon to ease the jam.

  • KelvinCSC

Admin I got your point. But if we are still on the road in front of Ria Condo, and notice the jam before the NZX tunnel, we can always choose not to use the NZX tunnel and turn right at the Ria Condo junction to use alternative road like Federal or NKVE too. The road from NZX tunnel to LDP is short so if its jam then we would know. But if going out thru FAS tunnel, the road is much longer, we might not notice the jams from the bridge infront of the RapidKL Hq and if we turn into that road and if it’s jam we have tough luck to make a u-turn back into NKVE. Well that’s what I thought. Really hope the tropicana link is open soon and the LRT depot be converted into station so no need jam. Ride bicycle to LRT every morning then. Save on petrol, money and time too. LOL.

I refer to the comment on “bad planning by MBPJ”.

All this mess is actually created by the whole rotten-to-the-core system; (MBPJ in its earlier incarnation), Selangor state government (also in its earlier form), land office, etc. in approving housing projects without taking into due consideration, proper vehicular access, etc.

At least, MBPJ in its present form has taken positive action in attempting to resolve the problem.

I also want to add that the NZX tunnel was never meant to be an access point to Ara Damansara. We were meant to use the Subang Airport Road exit.
