Unifi @ Ara Damansara – Old Phase
I’m staying in Embun, the old phase opposite Petronas Station. Some of you have requested for more information about the installation of TM Unifi, the entire process was easy, to me at least. Once you have registered, Telekom Malaysia will actually make an appointment with you for the installation day. The process will take 6-8 hours, so don’t expect to just drop home during lunch time to get it over, you need entire day for that.
If you are staying in the old phase of Ara Damansara, check the pole behind your house and look for a thick yellow cable. Each pole point is only able to cater 4 residents, so make sure you get it quick! The telekom guys will actually pull a black fiber cable from that pole to the back of your house.

Sometimes the pole may be far from your house, it is better to inform them to make a relay to the pole that is near to your house, they normally won’t do it because it is extra work but we should insist or else the cables in the sky will look really messy.

From the pole to your house, you can decide where the cable will come in. Before you decide, you must understand that there will be 4 devices in your house for the unifi service:
1) A black device that connects to the white fiber optic cable.
2) A D-link wireless router (White/orange). The wan port connects to the black device.
3) A silver color set top box that have 2 cables, a HDMI cable to your TV and a red cable go to the D-link Wireless router.
4) A cordless phone connects to the black device.

It is easy if your TV is near to place where the fiber comes into your house. Else, you need a very long network cable to connect your set top box with the wireless device. Alternatively, they also have a wireless solution that cost additional money.

There shouldn’t be any major hacking but if you need, you will have to pay extra to the TM contractor. My suggestion is keep it visible because if the fiber cable breaks, you need to change the whole cable.
I subscribed the Unifi VP5 package and able to download up to 500KBps. I’m giving 2 thumbs up for TM Unifi service and highly recommend this to everyone.

Thanks for sharing! can you show some pictures of the 4 devices pl?
p/s I think you meant 5000Kbps (5Mbps).
No, it’s 500KBps, means about… 4Mbps, notice the big B ? 1 Byte = 8 bit…
The only concern for me before deciding on the installation is how will it affect my existing home alarm which is connected to my TM land line. I have asked the salesperson on whether it’s possible to connect the black device (BTU) to the existing wall phone port and thus indirectly connect the BTU to the alarm box. Unfortunately no definite answer from them.
It should work if the alarm is calling a normal mobile or pstn number.
that white cable looks small, is it a fiber cable? (The normal co-axial cable should be a bit fatter.) I am exploring how to run this cable into my living room without hacking or with a trunk which will be ugly.
Yea, is fiber, there is no coaxial cables at all.
Unifi is also available at the semi-D as well. I was told that the service has been available in our area since 01-07-10. Fortunately over at the semi-D the cables run underground directly into the telephone riser. So it is much neater.
The problem is that Unifi system comes with a new telephone no. For your information the Unifi department is a separate department from Streamyx in TM and they do not communicate with each other. So that means there will be 2 telephone lines unless we disconnect the old streamyx (together with the phone) line. However by doing so we may then have problem with the connection to the alarm system as well as the other extension lines in the house. Has anyone tried connecting from the broadband terminal unit (BTU) to the existing telephone wall socket?
As for the speed on the Unifi line, I have all praises for them. It is at least 2 times faster than the old 4Mbps streamyx line! As for the picture on the cable TV offered, it is also very good. In fact one of the channel is HD.
Another concern crossing my mind is whether the phone line will still works if there is power failure? Existing TM land line is not affected by TNB power failure.
ooice, you threw a very very good question, the answer is NO. The phone line will definitely be DOWN if there is any power failure.
From one source: “TM is adding about 100 HSBB subscribers a day. There are currently 8,000 HSBB subscribers with a 1,000 subscriber waiting list.”
I am so tempted to go for it but my Streamyx contract still has 5 months to go, what shall I do?
hi, can i know what is the speed u can get @ daytime??
