PJ residents may be charged for garden waste collection

Source: Star Dec 2

HOUSEHOLDS in Petaling Jaya might end up being charged for disposing of garden refuse if the working paper being prepared by the Petaling Jaya City Council’s (MBPJ) Health Department gets the nod at its sub-committee meeting to be held soon.

Councillor Ahmad Yusof Ludin has called upon the MBPJ to charge ratepayers for the collection of garden refuse.

“Recently, we have noticed that residents just choose to dump the tree trunks, branches and leaves on the road side.

“Our contractors are forced to pick up the waste and the council has to fork out the money to pay for the collection,” he said at MBPJ’s full board meeting.

MBPJ has 10 contractors to collect garden waste in Petaling Jaya.

Another councillor, Muzammil Hafiz, supported Ahmad Yusof’s proposal for charges to be enforced.

“In the past, Alam Flora used to charge for the collection of waste from the residents compound but now it is free.

“We have to discuss the matter thoroughly to ensure a mechanism is in place,” he said.

Later, mayor Datuk Mohammad Roslan Sakiman told pressmen that the council collected between 170 and 200 tonnes of garden waste month.

“We pay the contractors RM240 for a tonne of waste collected.

“At this moment we have not decided to charge but we will impose a charge to maintain some kind of control on how the waste is to be disposed of,” he added.

This would be so going against the Green City concept being perpetuated by the local govt. Everyone knows that there will be bound to be garden refuse from the trimming of shrubs, trees, grass cuttings, whether by residents or local councils. If MBPJ decides to implement this, will there be less trees and shrub planting? I think so. I, for one, will certainly think twice about planting them if every time I maintain my garden, which is a fortnightly affair, if not weekly; I will have to fork out money to have them removed. Not to mention the inconvenience of calling them up for the collection each time!

The councillors supporting this ought to be shot! What about roadside tree branches or trunks that fall off in stormy weather and residents so kindly remove them to the side table so as not to obstruct road? Will he have to pay for their removal?

What are we paying our assessments for? Why didn’t Alam Flora make a fuss when they had to do it? Why is MBPJ not doing this job when they are saying they are saving lots of money by terminating Alam Flora’s contract? For the record, current collection of garden refuse by the current contractor leaves a lot to be desired. Previous contractor was MUCH better, more thorough & more regular.

The garden refuse collection works by MBPJ have been snakily downgraded to on complaint basis instead of regular basis since Alam Flora service was terminated by MBPJ.Now I know why :-(

I am a Claremont resident that pays MBPJ in excess of RM600 per year in assessment fees. What do I get in return? Infrequent rubbish collection, unkept fields and playgrounds, mosquitoes breeding in clogged drains (when was the last time our area was fogged and drains cleared of leaves?), overgrown trees (branches not trimmed for more than 3 years), streetlights that don’t work and garden refuse that is only cleared once in a blue moon.

MBPJ, please return my money as your level of service is infrequent and unsatisfactory. Please be accountable when serving the rakyat.

just called Zaini and he’s responsible for garbage only and not garden waste.

Everytime after I cut grass, I have to make a complain to MBPJ before they come to collect it. When Alam Flora is doing it, without fail garden waste will be collected weekly.

Anyone know who can I call other than MBPJ complaint department?
