Green is the new buzz word in town as we see more companies announcing green initiatives. Really green with envy!

What really is a green initiative? Is it recycle? Or re-use?

Recycle. The recycle logo can be seen on some food cartons and on all aluminium cans. Besides these, many other household items can be recycled. For example, newspaper, magazines, glass bottles, all form of plastic, all form of metals: iron, zinc, copper; steel etc etc. There are many collection centers where you can dispose them off for some pocket money. Aluminium cans can fetch a good sum at RM5 a kilo but you need to collect lots and lots of them as each empty can weigh only about 8grams.

A green initiative is more than recycling. It is about using less power through energy efficient lightings and intelligent appliances that conserve power. It is about using less petrol resulting in lower CO2 emissions through car pooling, use of hybrid vehicles or even working from home. Solar powered hot water, parking meters and even street lamps are good examples of green initiatives. There are many more examples. Green initiatives, basically is about conservation, protecting our precious and diminishing resources on Planet Earth and preserving our environment for the future generations.

Interested to be a green ambassador?

Here is what you can do. Support recycling. If you like to donate to charity, there is a recycling bin at Dataran Ara. There are many other things you can do. Switch to energy saving bulbs. It may cost more initially but on the long run, you save on on your electricity bill and support a lower demand of electric power. Don't leave your air-con on the whole night, use the timer to switch off in the early mornings. Our neighborhood is cool in the early mornings thanks to the many trees planted by the developer and the open spaces. Avoid grappling your car keys when you need to run for an errand. Take the bicycle or a walk. Make your own fertilizers from your organic waste. Put your unwanted vegetables and fruit peels into a container, add some brown sugar and let it ferment for 90 days. The resulting liquid is excellent nutrients for your plants.
